” After nine years at Deloitte I’m still learning ”
Senior Manager Tax & Legal.
From analyst to senior manager, with a two-year break in Chicago. Deloitte always offers all kinds of opportunities to grow. That’s why, after nine years, Alexandra is still learning. Whether it’s cross-functional collaboration with colleagues from Consulting or Risk Advisory, aspirations to expand the client portfolio, coaching, or the next step to the director level: every day offers new opportunities.
‘I don’t like stagnation’, says Alexandra Dubois (32). ‘When I was asked to joint the VAT team in Chicago in 2015, I didn’t hesitate for a minute. Within three months I got on a plane to the USA and a new world opened up for me in so many ways. It’s a wonderful city and the assignments were amazing. I was able to work with multinationals and coordinated big global projects with a diverse team.
It was a great opportunity to get to know the various VAT systems and experience the cultural differences, both in the legal area and in my co-workers. The speed of my development definitely tripled.’

As a senior manager, Alexandra is now mostly developing her commercial skills. ‘The Deloitte career path consists of various stages of learning. In the first few years your development is mainly aimed at content and time management. After a while, the focus shifts to account management, people development, industry focus, and commercial skills.
As a senior manager you learn how to build a business case and become more of an entrepreneur. You develop a vision of where you want to go with Deloitte as a company, but also how Deloitte can support you. After all, “people” is one of the pivotal strategic pillars at Deloitte. As a “people person” I really appreciate that.’
Besides opportunities to grow Alexandra really likes the working dynamics at Deloitte. ‘Never a dull moment. As a tax advisor you’re able to look behind the scenes at many clients. You often solve problems, but as an expert and sparring partner you also get to play a part in delivering improvements and new business initiatives. I prefer supply chain optimization projects. You get to consider the impact of VAT and other taxes as well as the business. How to make the supply chain as simple, compliant and tax efficient as possible?
For many assignments we work with colleagues from other disciplines, which also offers you the opportunity to learn and grow. For instance, our supply chain colleagues from Consulting know all the trends and developments in the market. In turn, we make them aware of certain tax facilities. Collaboration turns us all into allround professionals.’
Some people think that working at a big firm is tough, says Alexandra. ‘However, that’s not the case at all. Deloitte is an inspiring place to work with a high level of quality and the latest innovations. At the same time, there is a huge focus on people. From well-being and purpose to inclusion and diversity. The team spirit is excellent and we help each other to grow. For instance, a few years ago Deloitte started to offer trainings to improve coaching skills. You can also enter various mentoring programs.’
At Deloitte you don’t just develop in a particular field. ‘And that’s also true for the opportunities, which are endless at a global firm’, Alexandra explains enthusiastically. ‘Next to the valuable experiences at the Dutch firm and abroad you also learn a lot from your clients. For instance, I worked a couple of months at a multinational in logistics as an interim VAT manager. That was a unique opportunity to experience what it’s like to be a corporate tax lawyer. Such an experience makes me a better advisor, because it helps me to understand my client’s situation. In short, Deloitte offers you the opportunity to grow in any direction and to keep growing. That’s why, after nine years, I still feel like this is the place to be for me.’
What impact will you make?
