More and more charities are becoming visible online. They use the internet to obtain donations and members, provide information and to host campaigns. These online activities may expose the charities to cyber threats. Therefore Hacking for Charity was started, an initiative that offers free security tests to a select group of organizations. Priyam, who is part of the team, tells us more about this project they started through the Deloitte Impact Foundation.

“Deloitte wants to make an impact that matters and as such we offer free of charge security tests to a select group of charities, cultural institutes or organizations promoting diversity to assess vulnerabilities in their online systems. During the event, hackers and non-hackers of our team collaborate to provide insights to the foundations on not only technical security issues, but also an insight into privacy, strategy, governance concerns associated with application and / or infrastructure in scope of the test. We have done this for exam for Wakker Dier, The Ocean Cleanup, LittleBitz, Sensing Clues, and Earth Today.

We have received very appreciative comments from the foundations we have collaborated with in this initiative. The foundations are grateful for the insights our team provides during the event to explain the risk and potential course of remediation actions for the issues identified. Working on Hacking for Charity projects brings a sense of fulfillment to me. Given, we are all very busy with our jobs and personal lives, we should make time to add value and contribute towards social causes.

A general working week for me entails working on exciting cyber security engagements to help organizations identify and remediate security risks in their digital environment. In addition to our daily client work, our team of hackers dedicate an evening every two months to help different foundations targeting a wide range of social causes secure their infrastructure and applications.
