Big Deals, Real Impact: Working on Mergers and Acquisitions

At Deloitte, it’s not just about numbers and analyses. For Frank Kwakman, Senior Manager in the M&A Transaction Services team within Strategy, Risk & Transaction Advisory, working with people and making an impact are central. “We help clients during one of the most significant moments in their company’s existence: a sale or acquisition.”

After studying Accountancy & Control, Frank (32) started his career in Deloitte’s Audit practice. For seven years, he enjoyed working on financial statements and audits, but he sought something more dynamic. “Through an internal exchange programme between Audit and Transaction Services, I had the opportunity to gain experience in mergers and acquisitions. I enjoyed it so much that I made a permanent switch.” Deloitte offers ample opportunities to develop yourself and take on new challenges. “My transition was fully supported by Deloitte. That’s typical of the organisation: if you express your ambitions, you’re given every opportunity to pursue what you’re passionate about”, Frank explains.

A Key Role

Frank’s Financial Due Diligence team, which is part of Transaction Services, supports companies during mergers and acquisitions. “We analyse the financial performance and prospects of companies and identify trends, risks, and opportunities”, he says enthusiastically. “We help buyers understand exactly what they’re purchasing or assist sellers in presenting their company in the best possible way. Our analyses are crucial for valuation and the agreements laid out in the purchase agreement.”

The work is diverse, ranging from financial analyses to drafting comprehensive reports. Repetitive tasks are handled using AI applications, allowing the team to focus on more complex analyses. The team also collaborates closely with management teams and other advisors, such as Deloitte colleagues from Corporate Finance or M&A Tax, as well as various investment banks. “It’s a dynamic process where you play a key role as an advisor.”

"Our report helps clients make key decisions, making our work tangible and impactful"

Working on Major Deals

What Frank particularly appreciates about his work is the variety and the impact you can make. “Every project is unique. You work on large, significant deals that are highly meaningful to our clients. We work for companies in various sectors, such as consumer goods, construction, energy, technology, and FSI. This allows you to constantly learn about new markets. As you gain more experience, you can specialise in a sector that appeals to you the most.” Frank himself has chosen Energy, Resources & Industrials. “I enjoy the tangible output and the transition to NetZero, as well as the no-nonsense mentality in this sector.”

Additionally, Frank enjoys staying close to the core of the numbers. “In Transaction Services, you’re constantly dealing with financials and how to present them best. This is very different from Audit, where the work is often more standardised. What makes our work even more interesting is its direct impact. The report we deliver is genuinely used in making key decisions. That makes our work tangible and impactful.”

Everyone Helps Each Other

According to Frank, the work is ideal for analytically strong, solution-oriented, and driven team players. “You need to handle deadlines well and enjoy working in a team.” Frank describes the culture at Deloitte and within his team as open and transparent. There is little hierarchy within the team, and collaboration is key. “We work in small teams of four to five people on a project. Everyone, from Business Analyst to Partner, has a role in the process. This open atmosphere and teamwork not only make the work productive but also highly enjoyable.”

"Deloitte offers access to an international network full of opportunities"

Beyond work, there is also a strong focus on team building. This includes annual summer and Christmas parties, sports events, and social gatherings. “It’s ultimately a people business. Good collaboration starts with strong interpersonal relationships.” Deloitte also offers numerous opportunities for personal and professional development. Regular training sessions are held on various topics, from technical subjects to leadership courses. “I recently attended a three-day manager training at Deloitte University in Paris. It was not only educational but also a fantastic opportunity to meet colleagues from across EMEA (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa) and other service lines,” Frank says. Working at Deloitte also means access to an international network full of opportunities.

“In addition to collaborating with international teams, there’s the possibility to work on projects abroad”, Frank explains. Deloitte offers programmes such as secondments, allowing employees to work temporarily in another country. “I have colleagues working in India and Curaçao, and it’s great to see how Deloitte facilitates these kinds of experiences. The work doesn’t stop at the border, and that makes it all the more challenging and inspiring.”
