How a mangrove project in Curaçao led to a brand-new Web3 platform
Kim Schneider, Digital Risk Solutions
Working on a revolutionary platform that changes the way we measure and report sustainability? It’s possible at Deloitte, as proven by Kim Schneider, Senior Manager in the Web3 team within Deloitte Digital Risk Solutions. She shares her story of how she leverages her technical expertise and passion for sustainability to make a lasting impact with Deloitte.

Kim (34) is a pioneer at Deloitte, focusing on Web3 technologies such as blockchain and digital assets. Her main project? The Environmental & Social Impact Platform, an initiative that helps companies record their sustainability performance in a fully transparent and traceable way. 'The idea for the platform came when Oscar Snijders, our NSE Sustainability Lead, started planting a mangrove forest in Curaçao. We wanted to document the impact of this project reliably, but there was no existing platform that met our high standards. So, we decided to develop one ourselves', Kim shares enthusiastically.
The platform will be used for nature restoration projects, where data on aspects like CO2 storage and biodiversity will be recorded. 'The project in Curaçao focuses on restoring mangroves, a crucial ecosystem that stores CO2. We also involve the local community in planting the mangroves, which not only creates jobs but also boosts tourism and fisheries. This way, we make an ecological and social impact', Kim explains. 'The mangrove project and our platform are both a pilot. I am very curious to see how our platform performs in practice. It’s fascinating to see how much more is involved than just CO2 storage.'

Room for entrepreneurship
Deloitte is known for its high standards of quality and integrity. Developing a platform like the Environmental & Social Impact Platform aligns perfectly with these core values. Kim explains: 'Many companies want to take sustainability seriously, but there’s often ambiguity about how data is collected and reported. With our platform, we make that process more transparent so companies can be confident their claims are accurate, avoiding risks like greenwashing.'
What Kim appreciates most about her job at Deloitte is the room for entrepreneurship. 'Even though there is always a client demand as the basis for our developments within Deloitte, I was given the freedom to drive innovation and develop the platform for the Mangrove Project. This shows that within Deloitte, we make room for development, even when the outcome is still uncertain. That is what I find special about Deloitte. They are open to innovation and support you if you have good ideas, even when it comes to new technologies.' Besides that freedom, Kim emphasizes the strong focus on personal growth and development. 'At Deloitte, the career path is clear, and you get a lot of support in the form of coaching and training. That wasn’t always a given with my previous employers', she shares.
Collaborating for a sustainable future
Working in a dynamic, technical environment can be challenging, especially without a technical background. Yet Kim has embraced her role as a bridge between technology and business. 'Working in tech can sometimes be a hurdle for women. But you don’t have to be a man or a developer to make an impact in this world. I taught myself the basics of technology to understand what’s possible, but it’s the combination of business knowledge and technical insights that makes the difference.'
For those considering working at Deloitte, Kim has an important message: 'You can learn a lot very quickly here, both professionally and personally. It’s a place where innovation and collaboration are central. Moreover, you work with colleagues from all over the world and can always rely on the expertise of others within the company.'
Kim concludes with an appeal to anyone interested in Web3 technology: 'Working at the intersection of technology and social impact, like with our mangrove project, is what makes my job so special. At Deloitte, you have the opportunity to truly make a difference, both within the company and beyond.'
