Rebuilding trust with recovery communication
Sarah van Hecke, Strategy, Risk & Transactions Advisory
'Every day, I strive to make a difference – even if it’s just for one person', says Sarah van Hecke, Senior Manager at Deloitte Strategy, Risk & Transactions Advisory. With passion and precision, she leads a team specialising in recovery communication within the public sector. What does this entail? Assisting government organisations in regaining citizens' trust when something has gone wrong. It’s a unique and challenging field where strategy, empathy, and communication converge.

More Than Saying ‘We are sorry’
Recovery communication is a relatively new field centered on rebuilding and restoring trust between civilians and institutions (organizations, governments, etc.) when the relationship has been (negatively) impacted. Think of cases such as the childcare benefits scandal or the earthquake damage in Groningen. 'Recovery communication goes beyond simply saying ‘sorry’. Although each case is unique, it ultimately boils down to the same question: what do the affected individuals involved need to move forward?' says Sarah. 'I see recovery as an opportunity. When executed correctly, it can restore trust, and even strengthen it.'
Sarah’s team supports organisations throughout all phases of the recovery process: from crisis management and implementing recovery measures to building long-term trust. 'We bring expertise about the transgression of apologies, achieving closure, visual and empathetic communication with citizens and strategically managing involved stakeholders. . Recovery is more than sending a standard apology letter to those affected. You have to listen, learn, and work towards recognition step by step. That requires knowledge but also empathy and the courage to do things differently. Ultimately, it’s all about the human relation.'

Making a Difference
Working on recovery means operating in an environment where politics, societal pressure, and human emotions intersect. In recovery communication, Sarah shares, you’re constantly confronted with dilemmas. For example, do you choose to act quickly to reduce uncertainty, or do you take the time to genuinely engage with people? 'These are tough decisions making it a complex playing field where you have to perform at your best every time,' Sarah says. 'That’s what makes the work both challenging and incredibly rewarding. You can truly make a difference, even if it’s just for one person.'
Shaping Your Own Role
'I love that Deloitte offers you the possibility to shape your own career,' Sarah explains. 'If you share your ambitions, you’re given the time and opportunity to realize them. Colleagues are always willing to help, everyone is exceptionally skilled at what they do, and that’s incredibly motivating.'
The culture is also very positive. Sarah adds: 'The company is truly inclusive, invests in equality, and offers ample learning opportunities. I recently attended a leadership course at the Deloitte Academy in Paris, for example. This focus on development makes Deloitte unique.'
Join The Team
Sarah’s team is consistently evolving, and she is looking for new colleagues. 'We have open positions at all levels, from consultant to manager.' Sarah explains the team is looking for candidates with a background in consultancy and communication who have a strong sense of empathy. 'You need to be able to understand the perspective of those affected, even if their situation is very different from your own', Sarah emphasises. 'Subject-matter expertise is important, but compassion and drive are indispensable.'
With her enthusiasm, Sarah hopes to highlight how special and meaningful this role is. 'If you want to make a difference in the relationship between government and citizens, and use the agility of a consultancy firm to help rebuild trust, then this team is the place for you!'
