Sharing stories, driving change

Loes Werkman & Barbara Santos Korte, Deloitte Women's Network

What’s it like to work in tech as a woman? For software engineers Loes Werkman and Barbara Santos Korte, it’s been a journey. At Deloitte and within the Women’s Network, they’ve found a place where they can challenge themselves, grow both personally and professionally, and contribute to a culture that values inclusion and innovation.

While both Loes and Barbara recognise that challenges still exist for women in tech, they see Deloitte as more inclusive than other places they’ve worked, with genuine conversations about diversity and inclusion embedded in the culture. 'Onboarding day at Deloitte is filled with discussions about equality and diversity, which is refreshing', Barbara notes. Loes adds: 'There is a lot of awareness regarding inclusion here, with a genuine sense of accountability and a strong drive to improve.'

When asked what advice they would give to women who want to start out in tech, both are quick to share: 'Instead of focusing on what you could bring to a company, think of what the company could bring you. Do their core values fit yours, and would you be learning what you want to learn there? Make sure the company fits you just as much as you fit them', says Loes. “Confidence is key”, adds Barbara. 'Managers have a high impact on your performance, development, and self-confidence. The wrong managers can make you question yourself and your potential. That’s why it’s so important to work with leaders who recognize your efforts and encourage your growth.'

Love for programming

Both women discovered their love for programming during their studies, drawn in by the creativity and problem-solving that coding requires. After exploring different paths, they found their way to Deloitte, seeking opportunities for growth, challenging projects, and a culture that encourages collaboration.

'When I joined Deloitte, I was looking for a place where I could really grow through diverse, complex projects with high quality standards and inspiring colleagues', Loes shares. 'Coding was my comfort zone, but networking my weakness, for which Deloitte provided a perfect learning ground. Now I enjoy connecting with my colleagues just as much as taking on coding challenges!'

For Barbara, who moved from Brazil to the Netherlands, Deloitte offered stability and a chance to grow in a new environment. 'I saw an opportunity for long-term growth and a chance to learn while being part of something bigger', she says. Now working as a backend developer and team lead, she enjoys mentoring juniors and expanding her skills.

The value of community

A key part of their journey at Deloitte has been the Women’s Network, which offers a platform to connect, share experiences, and learn from others. For Loes, the network became a place to be inspired by and learn how others tackle challenges. 'If I’m struggling with something, whether it’s work-related or personal, it’s reassuring to know there’s a community we can turn to for advice', she says.

Barbara found valuable support through the network when preparing for a promotion, joining a female leadership training programme that provided practical tools and a space to share experiences. 'It was incredibly helpful to practise real-life situations and to learn from others who had faced similar challenges', she shares. 'For example, at the beginning of my career, I always felt I had to prove myself more than my male colleagues. But when I became a team lead, I noticed that people questioned me less.'

Helping others feel seen and heard

Both Loes and Barbara see the Women’s Network as an important contribution to creating a more inclusive environment, helping others feel seen and heard. They believe that opening up and supporting one another are key to driving positive change, not just within Deloitte, but in the whole tech industry. 'Sharing vulnerabilities and personal challenges within your team shows that you are just as human as your colleagues', says Barbara. 'Team members often appreciate this and get inspired to do the same.'

Loes and Barbara are optimistic about the future, committed to supporting others and contributing to a tech industry where everyone feels valued. By sharing their stories, they help shape a workplace where inclusion and innovation go hand in hand – proving that opening up, building connections and growing together is what truly drives change.
