‘A dynamic job as the spider in the web, as well as the right work/life balance’
‘Contact and collaboration with the client are vital to me. I used to work at a
law firm where the deals were getting bigger and bigger, whereby the direct
impact you have on the overall transaction as an individual adviser necessarily
becomes smaller.
In mid-market transactions you’re at the centre of the transaction, which means
making quick decisions and being directly involved in the client’s decisions on
a daily basis.’ For Tim Bird, Senior Manager at M&A Legal (mergers &
acquisitions), this was the key reason to switch to Deloitte Legal in 2020.

‘I had been working really hard for a number of years, including two years in
New York City. Next to a different focus in my job, I was looking for a better
work/life balance. One of the partners at my law firm informed me that Deloitte
had been building a legal advice team for the last few years. I had job
interviews with several law firms, including the more traditional ones, but
Deloitte Legal definitely stood out.’
One stop shop
‘In my opinion, the Deloitte Legal team is ahead of the other Big Four firms,
both in size of the legal department as in the fields of expertise. We are a
true one stop shop for our clients – we have specialists in any field. That is
very helpful for them – and interesting for me.
I’m involved with mergers and acquisitions, for which I often collaborate with
other Deloitte service lines, including Corporate Finance, Tax and Consulting.
Because of this close collaboration I keep learning new things about
transactions, which makes my job even more interesting.’

Life changing events
Professional depth ánd speed are vital to Tim. ‘Generally speaking I am involved
in five or six
projects at the same time, each of them with many short deliverables, one after
the other. It
feels good to finish your part in the project and see the result of it. Apart
from that, it’s great
to be involved with projects like these. Founders usually sell their business
only once, so this
is a life changing event for them. I enjoy contributing to that.’
As a Senior Manager, Tim is in charge of a team of twelve professionals. “I
manage the team along with the other members of the management team. So next to
being actively involved in transactions, I focus on the training and development
of juniors. Due to our protocol, there’s always a partner of director involved
in the transactions who is “higher in rank”, but I’m actually quite independent
in handling the transaction.
Next to that, I’m responsible for winning assignments for my team. Usually
through my Deloitte network. We work closely together with Corporate Finance
M&A, as if in one community. They often already work for a client and know when
there’s going a be an M&A opportunity. We divide the work within the team, and
of course you can share your preferences. After all, taking the initiative is
highly appreciated within Deloitte.’

Professional freedom and very driven colleagues
‘You also get the professional freedom to shape your job and seize
opportunities. That’s one of the things I like to discuss with the juniors in my
team. Because more than anything else, that is what appeals to me, working at
Deloitte: you get to seize business opportunities. If you notice anything that
could be interesting for you, Deloitte and our clients, you get the freedom to
develop that opportunity. Of course, we all aim for success, but “failure”
teaches you a lot, too.
The people who work here are very driven and entrepreneurial, which is highly
appreciated and promoted. For instance, I’ve worked together with colleagues
from Tax on developing several new business opportunities, such as setting up
fund structures for private clients. Currently we are looking to bring this
service to market and to expand it. This could be serious business in the
future. At Deloitte, an entrepreneurial spirit is very much encouraged.’

‘The dynamics between colleagues are excellent as well. This is a very social
place to work – we also meet outside of the office. And the work/life balance is
so good. Already in the first few months here I got my life back, after working
at a traditional law firm for years. I was finally able to make time for sports
and friends again. This is how I want my life to be!’
