Applying new technologies to old laws

MARLIEKE BAKKER
Manager Legal at Deloitte Legal
Building a virtual agent in collaboration with an academic hospital? Making sure tools such as new health applications comply with laws and regulations? It may not sound like the standard job of a lawyer. But it is exactly what Marlieke Bakker (30), Manager Legal at Deloitte Legal, works on every day: the intersection of legal possibilities and the use of technology.

“I've been working at Deloitte for five years now,” Marlieke says. “After I finished my study in Tilburg I began working as a legal counsel at an IT company. An interesting job, but I wanted to return to the Randstad. That is why I started looking around at a number of law firms, and Deloitte. I still remember the introductory meeting. There was an immediate match. The work content appealed to me, but especially the way of working together at Deloitte. It is a flat organization and as a junior you get a lot of freedom and customer contact from the start. It was exactly what I was looking for. My Digital Law department was just getting started. But in recent years we have grown from start-up and scale-up to a mature division within Deloitte. A valuable experience to have been a part in that.” Marlieke focuses at Digital Law on health law, privacy legislation and medical device legislation. “Our Digital Health team consists of health scientists, IT professionals, business experts and lawyers. In other words, a young and varied team with which we can offer customers an integrated solution. We also cooperate a lot with our colleagues abroad”, Marlieke continues. “It is very inspiring and educational to work with so many different backgrounds. As a lawyer you sometimes have a tunnel vision, it can be refreshing to see different perspectives. It is the approach of our team to always look at the possibilities, instead of the impossibilities. Our goal is to apply new technologies to old laws.”

Marlieke's team recently built a virtual agent in collaboration with an academic hospital. “This chatbot reduces the compliance burden for the legal department. Simple, frequently asked questions are answered by the virtual agent. And it can interpret questions and forward them to the appropriate department.” Marlieke is also working on supporting health applications. “Certain software sometimes qualifies as a medical device, which means it must meet strict quality requirements. We can investigate whether this is indeed the case and if so, which requirements the application must meet exactly.” On top of that she is very busy with the use of data in quality registrations. “How can the processes work more efficient? And with which tools? Which data can be shared, who is responsible and which contracts are needed?” It is a dynamic work field, Marlieke says. “This year the quality registration will be overhauled. There will be a new European regulation in the field of medical devices and many new requirements will be introduced. Interesting developments! The last few years I experienced that healthcare is my sector. I like to be socially involved and I think it's great that this is possible within an organization like Deloitte. Our team strives to keep healthcare affordable. By adding technology, the care organization is relieved and employees can continue to focus on what really matters: providing care to the people.” But if healthcare is not your sector or if you do not want to choose just one sector, that is not a problem, Marlieke emphasizes. “At Deloitte you get plenty of freedom to do what you like and find interesting. You will be given the space to work on your own propositions and build your own customer base. You will learn a lot in a short period of time. Everyone at Digital Law follows the Legal Technologist Program, a broad training to become a lawyer with knowledge of technology. And after that you get plenty of time to discover what your area of interest is. Do you like two sectors or would you rather not pin yourself down? Then a hybrid role is of course also possible. Everything is possible at Deloitte.”
