‘At Deloitte I can reach my full potential’
‘I would never have guessed that Deloitte would be interested in me.’ Those are
the words of both Robin Smit, Assistant Accountant and Chloë Jansen, Manager at
Deloitte SME Integrated Services. ‘Fortunately, you don’t have to match a
standard profile. Deloitte is always willing to support you - for instance, with
opportunities for additional education.’

Chloë (32) had no financial background when she started at Deloitte, seven years
ago. ‘I graduated from the International Hotel Management School and worked in
the hospitality industry in Amsterdam. My focus was on revenue management, which
triggered my interest in accounting. When Deloitte offered a position, I decided
to apply. No pain, no gain. Of course, without a financial background it was a
bit of a challenge in the beginning. However, Deloitte offered me plenty of
opportunities. For instance, I was enabled to study the basics of finance at
Nyenrode University, followed by a (pre)master in controlling.’

Very ambitious
Robin (26) does have a financial background, but in his own words, he was “a
typical student”. ‘I needed a little more time for my higher vocational
education in Business Management in Alkmaar. I never expected that Deloitte - a
large corporate with such a powerful image – would be interested in me. But when
it comes to my job, I’m very ambitious. I want to reach for the top. Deloitte
has a wide range of challenging clients. You get to work on complex issues for
interesting companies. I joined Deloitte in April 2020 and I’m fully dedicated.
There’s so much to learn here.’

Champions League
SME Integrated Services, which is the department where Robin and Chloë are
working, offers accounting services, recurring management reporting and
analyses, financial advice, and can even manage the entire financials of its
clients. Robin: “Preparation of the annual accounts covers most of our work.
However, we do offer a variety of services within our team, and every colleague
has their own field of expertise. It’s great to be able to learn from all their
knowledge and experience. As an Assistant Accountant I make the preparations and
help colleagues like Chloë with the reporting. So far, I have been working for a
wide range of clients and industries. And what is even more special, is that I
was allowed to work with my clients directly from the start. You get so much
responsibility, which makes your learning curve even steeper. Deloitte is the
Champions League. That also means that the expectations are high. But if you
need help, there’s always someone there for you. You’re learning all the time.’

Small enterprise within a large company
As a Manager, Chloë manages client relations in the field of hospitality and
real estate. ‘Also, I support start-ups. My client portfolio is really diverse,
which adds to the fun’, she says. ‘I also dedicate a large part of my time
helping and coaching Assistants and Senior Assistants. I’ve been there myself,
so I know their challenges from experience. Together we can go to the max, which
is very satisfying. Coaching and support are key in a fun job. Fortunately, the
lines are short. With thirty colleagues, our team is like a small enterprise
within a large company. That means collaboration is easy and the culture is
informal. Our job profiles may have a certain degree of hierarchy, but there’s
no hierarchy at all between the team members.’

Brilliant
Chloë is Robin’s coach. ‘We meet every month and discuss how things are going.
That’s brilliant’, Robin says. ‘It’s so good to get feedback and find out if
you’re still on the right track. It helps you to focus and feel good about
yourself.’ Chloë fully agrees: ‘Everyone at Deloitte – including me - has their
own coach. This is very helpful. It’s great to have someone you can discuss
anything with, whether it’s work or life. : It helps you to get insight into
your strengts, your areas of development and your role within the team. Also, it
is a great way to set career goals and make the best of all the opportunities
within Deloitte.’
