Behind the Numbers: A Glimpse into Deloitte’s Audit FSI Department

Rohan Thomas & Sarah van der Wal
When Sarah van der Wal (27) and Rohan Thomas (23) talk about their roles in Deloitte’s Audit & Assurance, their enthusiasm is infectious. Both are part of the Financial Services Industry (FSI) department, working closely with financial institutions like banks, fintechs, insurance companies and pension funds. “No two days are alike. Our job offers exciting challenges, and plenty of room for growth.”
FSI isn’t just a department, it’s a dynamic environment that brings together people from diverse backgrounds and skill sets. “The FSI department is like an umbrella”, Sarah explains. “Underneath, you work with different teams for various clients. Sometimes it’s a large banking client. Other times, it’s a fast-paced fintech.” Rohan adds: “In the first two years, you get a broad view of the financial sector, auditing everything from trust services to investment management firms. The variety keeps it interesting.”

From Fintechs to Pensions: A Day in FSI

For Sarah and Rohan, no two days are the same. “One of the most challenging projects we’ve worked on recently was with a fintech client”, Sarah shares. “Their environment changes so rapidly that standard audit procedures don’t always apply.” Rohan agrees: “It’s not just about numbers, you really have to understand the client’s business processes and how their products work. This deep dive into their operations is what makes our work both challenging and rewarding.” Working alongside specialists, whether in IT, data analytics, or compliance, is a daily part of the job. “Even as juniors, we get to collaborate with experienced professionals across different fields”, Sarah says. “This exposure helps us learn and grow quickly.”

The Power of Diversity and Innovation

FSI’s international and innovative culture stands out. “Our team is incredibly diverse”, says Rohan. “We have colleagues from South Africa, Denmark, and Japan, to name a few. It’s fascinating to see how different cultures approach the same work.” Innovation also plays a significant role. From in-house AI tools to advanced data analytics, technology is reshaping the way audits are conducted. “We use tools like Headstart, Deloitte’s own AI platform, to streamline our work”, Sarah explains. “It’s a game-changer, but we still need the human touch to interpret and apply insights.”

A Clear Path for Growth

Deloitte’s commitment to personal and professional development is something both Sarah and Rohan appreciate. “Each year, you take on more complex tasks and responsibilities”, Sarah says. “There’s a clear path for growth, and feedback from managers helps you improve continuously.” Rohan highlights the supportive environment: “When I started, I had minimal accounting knowledge. But Deloitte provides the guidance and resources you need to succeed. It’s about being eager to learn and open to new experiences.” The team’s openness to feedback and flexible work arrangements further enhance the experience. “It’s all about communication”, Sarah notes. “If you need time to study for your post-master’s or want to work from home, it’s supported.”

Making an Impact Early On

One of the most surprising aspects of working in Audit & Assurance is how quickly you’re given responsibility. “In my first two weeks, I was already in meetings with senior client executives”, Rohan recalls. “It’s rare to get that kind of exposure so early in your career.” For Sarah, the combination of client interaction and technical work is what she loves most. “It’s not just about crunching numbers. You’re building relationships, ensuring clients are happy, and contributing to meaningful projects.”

A Place to Belong

Ultimately, what sets Deloitte apart is its people. “The work might be similar across audit firms, but it’s the people who make the difference”, Sarah says. “I felt at home here from day one.” Rohan agrees, adding: “It’s a close-knit community, despite being part of a global organisation. From team events to everyday interactions, you feel connected.”
