Being an expat at Deloitte

Kate Wu
Senior Staff Audit

As an expat, I’ve been told many times that if I want to get a job in the Netherlands, it can be quite difficult in the regions outside the Randstad. Indeed, I also used to receive comments from multiple recruiters saying my resume is “too international” for their companies. However, this is not the case with Deloitte. I was offered an internship position at Maastricht office right after my interview and now it’s the third month I work full time here.

It’s been almost six years since I started my career and Deloitte still keeps surprising me with its diversity and inclusion. During the introduction weeks, I had the chance to meet other international new hires from all over the Netherlands. This “international force” includes colleagues from Europe (e.g. Italy, UK, Bulgaria, Croatia) to Asia (e.g. China, Indonesia, Vietnam, India), to Africa(e.g. Kenya, Egypt) and to Americas (e.g. the U.S). Some of them I will continue to work with in my post-master study. This study program is available to all audit professions within Deloitte, which allows us to get the RA certificate without the prerequisite of master Dutch. Deloitte makes sure that international employees have the equal chance to pursue their career without worrying about the language barrier.

"I feel like part of the team since day one, and my office has been nothing but welcoming and inclusive."

While making me stay connected with the international community, Deloitte is also doing its best to make the new hires feel included in the local community. Just to name a few: each of us has a buddy to help us onboarding; a new hire dinner was organized for us to get to know each other; an evaluation meeting was set for us to give feedback and communicate experiences in the first month. In addition to that, I’ve been invited to the group responsible for organizing team events in my office, which gives me even more chances to get to know my colleagues. I feel like part of the team since day one, and my office has been nothing but welcoming and inclusive.

Now I really look forward to getting my RA title, together with all the challenges and opportunities along the way. I know it’s not an easy path (speaking from the person who finishes work at 5p.m and continues study until 11 p.m), but I believe it helps me finding the purpose of my work and making an positive impact to our communities. As taught in my textbooks, auditors always represents the public interest. I am confident in achieving my goal because I know Deloitte and I share the same interest in this matter. All I want to say to you at this point is: give it a try with Deloitte, here we offer everybody the chance to be the person you want to be. Come and join us at Deloitte, we are excited to have you.
