Contributing to society and pursuing a career as a consultant: what’s that like?
At Deloitte, there are plenty of opportunities to
make a social impact, such as improving the
organization of healthcare or defense. But what’s
that like? Sven Dalessi, Senior Manager Business
Operations, and Lotte Diender, Manager
Sustainability & Climate at Deloitte tell us about it.

When Sven joined Deloitte as an analyst 11 years ago, he knew that he wanted to
be
involved with complex challenges and problems, and that he wanted to help
organizations
move forward. Over time, he became a senior manager business operations. At the
same
time, his moral ambition grew; he wanted to make a bigger impact. Now, he
engages in
projects at the Ministry of Defense.

‘It feels very rewarding, especially in times like these, to make the
Netherlands safer,’ he
says. The Ministry of Defense has been in a phase of downsizing for many years,
with
decreasing budgets, resulting in less funding for the armed forces and related
(IT) resources.
‘Meanwhile, at Deloitte, we are helping The Ministry of Defense with
implementing major
digital transformations and how they can work in an information-driven manner.
This
includes IT resources that they need for conducting their operations, such as
secure
communication tools.’

Social Contribution
Lotte also likes the fact that she is contributing to society. She joined
Deloitte eight years
ago after studying healthcare. ‘I have worked a lot in healthcare and in the
public sector at
Deloitte. One of my projects, for example, was setting up a digital healthcare
platform in the
Rotterdam region. I found it very cool because you really collaborate with
hospitals, general
practitioners, and long-term care institutions to improve the entire healthcare
chain, so that
healthcare providers can work better together and patients can benefit from it,’
says Lotte,
who is now a manager of sustainability & climate. She continues: ‘Many people do
not find
the word ‘implementation’ or ‘practical’ very appealing, but I get energized by
not only
dealing with strategy but also answering the ‘how.’ How can the client implement
the
strategy? That is often complex. My efforts are not just in vain; I can really
make an impact.’

Recently, she has been diving deeper into sustainability and the challenges we
face as a
society. It started as a personal interest; at Deloitte, there are plenty of
opportunities to
develop yourself towards a topic that you have an affinity for. Lotte Diender
says, ‘Now I am
working on an impact analysis of sustainability at a healthcare institution. We
will determine
the strategy to become more sustainable and then reduce CO2 emissions.’

Collaboration
In projects like these, it is essential to combine different areas of expertise,
which is why
they always collaborate with multidisciplinary teams at Deloitte. Sven Dalessi
says, ‘We join
forces to approach everything from different angles to achieve the best results
for our
clients. Sometimes you are in a team of twenty people, the other time you work
with just
three. This also keeps things diverse, and you keep developing yourself.’
Self-development
can indeed go hand in hand with a moral ambition, both professionals believe. ‘I
hope to be
able to grow in sustainability. And that in the future, all our projects are
sustainable and
have a sustainability component. That would be my vision for the future’, Lotte
says.
