Deriving responsible insights from data
The Responsible Data & Analytics team focuses on
all things data. What do clients do with their data? Is
that a smart approach or are there better options
available? ‘It’s our job to help clients solve these
problems. We help them derive insights and
predictions from data.’ Aïcha Mohazzab, Senior
Consultant, and Sander Monster, Manager
Responsible Data & Analytics at Deloitte Risk
Advisory, explain further.

For Aïcha (24), “data” has always had a magical ring to it. ‘I’m from a family
of doctors, but after I fainted at the ER, my relatives supported my decision to
pursue Econometrics. Already at an early age I wanted to be a Data Analytics
consultant at a Big Four firm. During the job interviews with Deloitte I felt an
instant connection and I’m delighted to be part of this young, close-knit team.
My clients work in various industries and are facing all kinds of challenges. On
top of that, the social activities in our team are varied too.’

Top tier projects
For Sander (32) it’s a different story. He joined Deloitte after a career
change. ‘I worked at a small consultancy business in the south of the
Netherlands for 6.5 years. However, I’ve always wanted to work at a Big Four
firm. At Deloitte, you can work on top tier projects and make a bigger impact. I
thought the company culture would be more formal than that of a smaller office,
but that’s not the case at all’, he smiles. ‘There’s a very strong “coffee
culture” around here. Everyone is very open, on all function levels. We’re all
just colleagues who work with each other, not for each other.’

Big impact on society
Responsible Data & Analytics is a team with a broad focus. ‘When it comes to
data, we serve
the entire chain’, Aïcha says. ‘From data management and data governance to
advanced
analytics. For instance, I recently did a project where we analysed and improved
data quality
for transaction monitoring. Financial organisations monitor transactions in
order to prevent
money laundering and terrorist financing, and for this good data quality is key.
We have
programmed quality checks, built dashboards, and prioritised improvements. It’s
an
substantively interesting project with a big impact on society. From an
econometrical point
of view we’re focused on data science and analytics. I’m specialised in
predicting time
sequences, but as a consultant your job is much more diverse in the various
client projects.
Our team is able to deliver tailormade solutions for our clients by quickly
understanding
issues, communicating clearly and applying our technical skills.’

Follow your dreams
Sander is focused on the Technology, Media & Telecom (TMT) industry. ‘When you
specialise in a particular discipline, you can make more impact over time. But
what I like about Deloitte is that nothing is ever fully fixed. If your
preference changes over time, you can switch to another discipline. If you share
your passion and dreams, Deloitte will help you find interesting projects’, he
explains excitedly. ‘My clients are facing various challenges – qualitative or
quantitative, complex and comprehensive or shallow, wide or focused. It’s our
job to analyse their problem, find a solution and build it. That energises me so
much – making something out of (almost) nothing, and solving problems.’

A passion for data
Both Aïcha and Sander have a background in Econometrics. Yet they have different
roles within their team. ‘Aïcha is the smart analyst and I’m the guy who builds
end to end solutions with clients’, Sander says. ‘There are various profiles
within our team. It’s extremely valuable to have so many thinking patterns and
such a wide focus in a team. Next to Econometrists we are also interested in
people with an IT and Business background, since we also focus on the function
of data. What connects us, is our drive, and a passion for data.’
‘If you don’t have the right skills yet, that’s no problem’, Aïcha adds. ‘The
extensive learning options and various client projects will offer you a broad
and challenging development potential. Within Deloitte there are various groups
you can join. With several of my Artificial Intelligence colleagues we expand
expertise and share our passion for innovation. Personal development is
encouraged in many ways, for instance through coaching, which makes you feel
part of the wider success of the firm.’
