'Endless possibilities and the right work-life balance'
Patricia Versendaal started as an intern at Deloitte when she was 19, and followed what she calls "the long road" via mavo, mbo and hbo. She has been an accountant at Deloitte SME's Integrated Services for five years now. 'I came into contact with Deloitte through school, looking for an internship. After my mbo internship at Deloitte, I started working there four days a week and also studied hbo Accountancy at Avans Hogeschool one day a week, followed by hbo+. I also followed my final practical internship at Deloitte. In 2014 I successfully graduated as an AA accountant.'
'I specifically chose the compilation practice in the SME, because I find the
personal and
periodic contact with the entrepreneurs in the SME more enjoyable than working
for large
international companies, where often an accountant or controller is employed.
These are
usually not small one-man businesses, but for example, we help companies with a
turnover
of one million per year to grow further, or start-ups focused on growth. At SMEs
Integrated
Services we also work for family businesses. Sometimes something specific, such
as the
transfer from parent to child, is very nice to to be involved.
The atmosphere at Deloitte is informal and we have a close-knit team. About
every quarter
we organize an outing on our own initiative, sometimes with supporters. In our
group app
we discuss and share everything with each other. We are friendly with each
other, a game of
table football in between the busy work is just part of that. New colleagues
feel right at
home here. Everyone has their own coach, including myself, but I am also the
coach of four
colleagues. I want to be an example for those I coach and for our team and
beyond, in a
connecting role. I also do the HR work for our office/cluster.'

'Two years ago I became a manager and I am currently following the trajectory to
become a
senior manager. I have a son who is almost two years old and I am now pregnant,
but that is
not an obstacle at all. After my leave I started working for four days, just
like many female
colleagues I know who are also mothers. Deloitte is very flexible in this, I can
work from
home but also at the Breda office where I live nearby. I am at home on
Thursdays, my
customers also know that if there is really something they can always call.
Although this
rarely happens in practice, because they understand that Thursday is my 'mom-son
day'.
Deloitte pays a lot of attention to work-life balance. ProudMom is an initiative
within Deloitte
that aims to assist women, during and after their pregnancy. I organize national
meetings
for women to help them with this and to get in touch with each other. We invite
a nice
speaker, like last time Nathalie Holwerda, author of boe know about how you
present
yourself as a woman at work.'

'I like to travel, although that is now on the back burner. A few years ago I
worked in India
for two months, at Deloitte in Hyderabad. We have been working for years with a
team in
India that helps us with support work. In India we rotated with colleagues from
the
Netherlands to guide the colleagues in India, very fun and educational, where I
also saw part
of the country. You don't just get such an opportunity, I recommend everyone to
pick up
something like it comes your way. I always try to show what is possible. You can
really
achieve something if you want it yourself.'
