From meeting room to a class room

WOUTER VERMEEREN
Consultant Business Model Transformation
In addition to his work as Consultant Business Model Transformation, Wouter Vermeeren is giving ICT lessons at a high school for the second time this year through the Deloitte Impact Foundation. ‘It gives me immense satisfaction to see students getting excited about ICT. You get to contribute back to society, get to meet new people and at the same time, get to know the teaching profession.’

Wouter (28) studied Industrial Engineering and got a master's degree in Operations Management & Logistics. ‘I actually ended up at Deloitte by coincidence,’ he says. ‘When I participated in a transformation at a large Dutch bank as a working student alongside my master's degree, I knew immediately that this was what I wanted to do. A friend pointed me to the Business Model Transformation team at Deloitte, which offered me exactly what I was looking for in terms of work. I am now happily working on my fifth project within this team. We help our clients to translate their overall business strategy into a specific strategy for their Operations domain. We then create a new blueprint of the operating model, incorporating the strategy into the processes, organization and technologies. We draw up the plan to realize that blueprint and guide the client during the execution of the transformation. In short, we are the architect, and also the contractor!’

Lot of variety ‘On average, my projects at Business Model Transformation lasted about four months, sometimes a little longer. I really like that variety,’ says Wouter. ‘For example, a while back a colleague and I decentralized the call center of a hospital, where the handling of telephony went back to all kinds of different departments. In this project, we touched on all the different phases of a transformation and all the different subjects, such as HR and ICT, but also communication and the healthcare processes. I also developed a data model for a bank in which we looked at all 1,600 products to see how the offering could be simplified. I am currently working on a large project at an international security company in which we are replacing the IT systems and associated way of working of four different departments in five different countries with 150 Deloitte colleagues. Very challenging and also very instructive.’

Noisy classrooms ‘I get a lot of energy from doing things I haven't done before, ’Wouter laughs. ‘In addition, I have had the idea for some time that when I am done with a career in business, I would like to spend a few more years in front of the classroom. So when the Deloitte Impact Foundation - through which Deloitte makes a pro bono commitment to society, made a call for ICT teachers, I didn't hesitate long. I see it as a nice shift from the business environment I spend the rest of the week in and as a great opportunity to make myself useful to society, especially given the shortage of teachers. A greater contrast hardly exists, from business meetings in office buildings to noisy classrooms full of adolescents. It was completely out of my comfort zone and therefore a lot of fun to do. This year, for the second time, I am running my program which I created myself after several days of training.’

App design In eight weeks, Wouter teaches the senior secondary students to design an app for the subject of user experience. ‘We are not going to be programming, but are mimicking an app in PowerPoint. I explain the theory and give insights into the business and psychological ways companies try to influence users. The goal is to get students to look at the apps differently, that they use every day in a playful way. Pretty challenging, but they pay attention and are very enthusiastic. I combine it with my normal project work. I work a little longer the rest of the week so I can go to school on Friday afternoon. That requires some coordination, but it was no problem at all both last year and this year. I think this is a very typical way of working at Deloitte. You are in charge of your career and the path you want to take. If you want to contribute to the foundation, or develop yourself in another way, anything is possible, especially if you take the initiative. As for me, another class next year!’ Collaboration with Co-Teach In addition to education, the Deloitte Worldclass program offers a Co-Teach [https://www.co-teach.nl/] Computer Science program. On the one hand we develop the teaching modules in co-creation, on the other hand we have now also been asked to help with the scaling up and professionalization of the Co-Teach program in the Netherlands in collaboration with NL Digital and have a seat in the national steering committee chaired by Pieter Duisenberg (Vereniging Universiteiten Nederland).
