Introducing Jochen Blaffert

Jochen Blaffert
Partner Financial Services Industry

Jochen Blaffert started as a partner at Deloitte Legal in June 2021. He took on the role of Financial Services Industry (FSI) Lead, and as such he is responsible for the growth of the Legal practice within this field. ‘It’s a wonderful challenge’, Jochen says.

Jochen has been working in the Financial Services Industry for decades – as a corporate client and an advisor. Also, he has ample experience working for a Big Four firm. ‘What I like about being a legal advisor at a Big Four firm is the combination of in-depth expertise and working in a multidisciplinary team. Your actions in your field of expertise have consequences for the other disciplines within the firm. So you need a broad perspective, various competences and attention for aspects outside your own field’, he explains passionately. "There’s a lot of energy within the team. Together, we will scale up Deloitte Legal. Our goal is to become one of the major players in this field."

Unique approach

Why did he switch to Deloitte? Jochen: ‘Deloitte is a very entrepreneurial and dynamic place to work with room for growth and innovation. Also, Deloitte has its own unique approach, which is why we are so successful. This approach ensures that our advice really works for our clients. When I hired external advisors at my former employers, I often had to “translate'' their advice twice. First for executives such as the Executive Board and the Supervisory Board, and then again for the internal organisation that was supposed to do the implementation. At Deloitte, we make sure our clients immediately understand the advice. We are the trusted advisor that puts the client first, with an eye for implementation.’

Expect the impossible

The Deloitte Legal discipline is expanding rapidly. ‘Currently, our team consists of 75 people, so we are turning into a big player. However, our goal is to become twice as big in the next few years. That’s a huge challenge, since we also expect the impossible from our people’, Jochen smiles. ‘They need to be passionate about their job and have in-depth expertise. But we also expect them to have competences such as presentation skills, advisory and commercial skills, affinity with technological solutions in their field of expertise, and the ability to take on various roles in the implementation stage. Also, we strive for diversity within the team – in competences as well as background. We want to offer our clients an appealing and diverse team. Apart from that, teamwork is marvelous when a team consists of individuals with various backgrounds and shared interests.'

Informal yet professional

According to Jochen, the culture at Deloitte Legal is informal as well as professional. ‘Everyone is sociable, approachable and easy-going. But we also deliver high-quality services. Deloitte is a very transparent and non-hierarchical organisation. Everyone is taken seriously right from the start. You’re invited to discuss issues, share your opinion and work on your own plans. There’s plenty of room for that and it is highly appreciated. You can be you. All of this means that people can move from one position to another within a short while. After all, you won’t learn anything until you do it’, Jochen says. ‘So if you’re interested in developing yourself professionally and personally, if you’re looking for a challenging and attractive client portfolio, and if you would like to work in a large organisation that offers you plenty of opportunity as well as a well-organised and young department, then Deloitte is the right step for you!’
