Her Early Years: Facing Internal Struggles

Growing up, Pam didn’t fully explore who she was. While she went through her teenage milestones, she now realizes that some things didn’t quite add up. 'Looking back, I realize that my feelings were trying to tell me something in moments when my friends in high school made jokes about other girls—about their choice of clothing, attractiveness, or having a "girl crush." Avoiding this feeling continued into her university years. She dated men and lived what Pam calls a “normal student life.” But deep down, something was missing. I’d tell myself I just hadn’t found the right guy yet,' she explains.

Her Turning Point: Letting Go of Fear

Pam’s life began to change in the summer of 2022 when a casual night out turned into a moment of clarity. 'I was dancing with a woman at a party,' she says. 'And for the first time, something in my brain clicked, I allowed myself to experience this feeling. That feeling stayed with me for months. It was so clear, and I couldn’t ignore it anymore.' Things accelerated when Pam opened up to close friends. Their support gave her the courage to be more open. Later, during a family conversation about LGBTQ+ topics, she took an unexpected turn. 'I suddenly said, ‘I don’t even know if I’ll end up with a man.’ It shocked me more than it shocked my parents, and their response was completely supportive. I never doubted my parents’ support, but having said it out loud was a big step forward for me.'

Her First Pride: The Power of a Safe Workplace

Pam’s first Pride experience as an out LGBTQ+ professional was unforgettable. Participating in Amsterdam’s Pride Parade on Deloitte’s boat, she felt truly free and felt a new sense of happiness. 'Pride felt like stepping into a world where I was completely accepted,' Pam shares. 'I’ll never forget the energy—pure joy and a sense of belonging.' For Pam, Pride is not just a celebration. 'It’s a way to show the world—and ourselves—that we’re here, and we belong,’ she says. Pam credits Deloitte’s Proud Network for playing a big role in her journey. 'When I came out, I wasn’t sure how to handle it at work,' she explains. 'Then a colleague, Ruben, invited me to a Proud event. That small gesture made a huge difference. Being around colleagues who were completely themselves gave me the courage to do the same.' Now, as an ambassador for Deloitte Proud, Pam wants to do the same for others. 'I want to be the person I needed when I was figuring things out,' she says. 'Representation at work matters. Sometimes the small things—a friendly word, an invitation—can make a big impact.'

Her Lessons Learned: An Advice for Others

Looking back, Pam sees how coming out changed her life. 'Coming out wasn’t just about telling other people—I had to come out to myself first,' she says. 'For years, I carried this secret and convinced myself I was fine. But when I started living my truth, it brought me a different kind of freedom. I used to feel pressured to fit into expectations. Now, I see the beauty in being different. It’s realizing that you don’t have to follow the same path as everyone else. That realization has made me stronger and happier.' For those struggling with similar fears, Pam’s advice is clear: take small steps, but start. 'You don’t have to figure everything out at once,' she says. 'But don’t let fear stop you. Surround yourself with people who accept you for who you are. Things will start falling into place once you take that first step.'

Pam’s journey is a powerful example of how embracing authenticity can transform lives. Her story shows that when people feel safe to be themselves, they not only change their own lives—they make the world around them better, too.
