Sebastiaan Berendsen joined Deloitte Financial Risk Management as a Master Business Analytics graduate intern. He had the opportunity to research the rising and impactful field of Explainable AI (XAI). After successfully finishing his thesis, he continued his career at Deloitte as a consultant. He now focusses on the responsible use of AI for both Deloitte and clients. Allowing him to work on something he is passionate about. ‘After rapidly developing myself in the field of XAI and responsible AI, I was extremely happy to join Deloitte’s Risk AI Expert Group with professionals across numerous domains. In the Risk AI Expert Group, we learn from each other, enhance our AI capabilities and develop innovative AI powered solutions for our clients.'

'AI powered algorithms and solutions have proven that it can significantly boost various domains where data is present. Financial Risk is such a domain. However, the use of AI does come with additional risks like a lack of fairness, transparency or poor performing algorithms. Tackling these challenges with our clients, by implementing responsible AI algorithms and frameworks, leads to better quality of AI algorithms. This is of course directly beneficial to our clients but also indirectly beneficial for society.
Knowing that my work has a positive impact, gives me energy and excites me. The Financial Risk team is young and energetic. I found out that the team pushes new ideas constantly, which makes me feel very comfortable. For me, a good example is Glassbox. This is Deloitte’s tool for assessing transparency and fairness in AI algorithms, which I support the development of.
I discovered that bringing new ideas to the table is highly appreciated. I feel like if our team continuously researches new opportunities and innovations, we push our collective capabilities and knowledge forward. I believe it is important to work with a purpose. Deloitte helped me in discovering that purpose and what is important to me in my daily work. For now I would say, being a thought leader while making an impact that matters for society and clients is mine.’
