'So many opportunities, it’s like a candy shop’
One minute they're 'doing cool things with data' and
the next Eline is on a plane to Italy for dance lessons
and Dave is teaching a course to colleagues. The
Senior Consultants at Data & Responsible Insight are
given all the space they need to do what suits them
– and they like it. 'At Deloitte, literally anything is
possible.'

Give them a ton of data and Eline Cloudt (24) and Dave Saragih (27) are in their
element.
They organize all the information, ensure that its quality is up to standard,
subject it to
analysis and identify risk. They also present clients with interesting insights
and trends that
they extract from the data.
Odd combinations
Eline is currently working on a project for a large pension fund. She ensures
that all the
information on members' pension accrual is in order. 'In the course of their
career, people
typically accrue pension through several different employers. And there are
contingencies in
the meantime, like buy off and conversion. We analyze all the information in
order to
improve the quality of the data. On top of that, advanced analytics and
innovative models
are making the process increasingly efficient, such as the Anomaly Detection
Model. We
feed it data that lacks context and the model picks out any odd combinations,
which we
then analyze. It's much faster than manual analysis and as an added bonus the
model has a
much keener eye for anomalies than the human eye.'

Pick up the pace
Dave works full time for a government agency, where he helps to ensure that
public
information is made available in a correct, consistent and timely manner.
'Together with my
team we're designing a solid data chain that the organization can rely on. The
responsible
use of citizens' information in that chain is of paramount importance. I was
concerned when
I started that I'd be able to make only very limited impact in a public
organization, where the
wheels of change grind slowly. But nothing could be further from the truth. As
an external
consultant, I'm perfectly placed to pick up the pace a bit. If I identify a
problem, I don't wait
but go straight to the management to discuss possible solutions. That way I get
things done
more swiftly and that feels good.'

Data and dancing
Eline en Dave work on meaningful, socially relevant projects. No wonder that
they are so
enthusiastic about their work. But there's more to life than data. Eline is an
international
ballroom dancer who jets off twice a month for training or a competition. 'With
a little
flexibility, there's no problem combining my dancing and my work. I catch up on
my hours in
the evenings, or work on the plane or in the car. I'm very thankful that
Deloitte gives me so
much support in my second career. They even keep an eye on my planning to be
sure that I
don't take on too much work.' Whether that works?’, Eline smiles: 'Aside from my
work, I am
in the Neurodiversity Network [/neurodiversity-network], I helped develop care
robot Alice and founded a chess club.
Oh, when I first started working here, I gave my colleagues a digital dance
workshop. I
simply get energized by doing many things at once!'

Chances up for grabs…
All those chances up for grabs to develop yourself are exciting for Dave, too.
'This place is
like a candy shop sometimes. Everything is possible; all you need to do is ask.
I enjoy helping
people for instance, being a guide and teacher. Everybody at Deloitte has a
coach. When I
discussed my mentoring aspirations with mine, I was given the chance to provide
technical
training to my colleagues. It was very instructive, both for me and my
colleagues. Besides
that, I'm also in the Diversity, Inclusion & Wellbeing working group, which
develops
campaigns to promote and stimulate diversity at Deloitte.”
…or to be left for someone else
And if it's not convenient, or you simply don't fancy taking on another task,
club or course,
then that's fine, too. 'They’re opportunities, not obligations,' says Dave.
'We’re equally fond
of people who focus on their work and at the end of the day close their laptops
to go do
their thing. Everyone can be themselves here.'

Helping each other grow
Eline and Dave don't see themselves leaving Deloitte anytime soon. 'The
organization has a
clear structure, the promotion path is attractive and my colleagues are
ambitious,' says
Eline. 'There's plenty of variety in the work and we all have a lot of fun
together.' Dave
agrees. 'The atmosphere is fantastic and despite everyone being so ambitious,
the
competitiveness is of a healthy sort. Everyone wishes everyone growth and
success, and
helps each other achieve it.'
Note to aspirants
To conclude, Dave has a few words for new potentials. 'You don't need a degree
in
Econometrics to work at Data & Responsible Insight. I studied Business
Administration, for
instance.' 'And I have a bachelor's in Psychology & Technology and a master's in
Human-Technology Interaction,' adds Eline. 'You need to have an affinity with
data, of
course, but the most important thing is that you're a good communicator and can
demonstrate the value of data to your colleagues and clients. Specialists in
other disciplines
can be equally valuable in our line of work. So, if you're interested, come and
have a chat
with one of us and get a taste of the atmosphere here. We bet you'll want to get
started
right away.'
