‘Solving practical tax problems for multinationals is like completing a challenging jigsaw puzzle’
Businesses invest, merge, expand, or close down. ‘Every action has consequences in the field of tax’, says Tim Raymakers, working at Deloitte M&A Tax. ‘We assist our – often large and international – clients, interpret laws and regulations, and translate this into what needs to be done. That’s like a challenging jigsaw with various layers.’

A huge impact As an Analyst
Tim does the starting analysis for new customer questions. ''I find out the broader framework of the issue. How is the organization designed and what kind of entities does it consist of? What laws are involved in the business of the organization? Once I have established the broader frameworks, I look for the more subject-specific answer to the question: the tax technical aspect then comes together with the more global economic aspect. Where necessary, I connect with my more experienced teammates to identify the problem areas in broad terms, so that I have direction in formulating the answer.'' 'Listening carefully and experiencing different situations is when you learn the fastest. My focus is on the financial services industry (FSI). Amongst other things, we advise businesses that are looking to expand to the Netherlands, merge or invest here, or leave. These businesses are large corporates with vast resources. So what we do, makes a huge impact.’

A group of friends
The Business Tax team describes Tim as hard-working but sociable. "As a working student, I felt like I was joining a group of friends," Tim laughs, "which put me at ease quickly. It makes it easy to work together and to have an accessible transfer of knowledge. There is a great deal of trust in each other, which manifests itself in having a high degree of independence in the workplace. You are also in charge of your own schedule and can decide whether you prefer to work in the evenings, for example. This allows me to organize my weeks: I know what work needs to be done and what is expected of me. How I do that is up to me.'' ''Also, internally, you are encouraged to take the lead in professional consultations or to participate in discussions. This benefits my skills enormously. And, outside of work, we invest in each other: we go to concerts, have (after-)work drinks and sail on the canals of Amsterdam. You quickly get to know your teammates.''
