Successful client transformations, from concept to implementation

Transformations team members Joram de Haan (Senior Manager) and Arlette Verdonk (Manager) work side by side with their clients. ‘We don't provide advice from the sideline but work closely together with the client to fully understand the intricacies of the organization. For example, how does a change of the business model, the reduction of the number of legal entities or the integration of operations impact the rest of the organisation? And how best to deal with that? We ensure that clients undergo successful transformations, achieving their objectives and ambitions.’

Knowing the ins and outs The Transformations team comprises of a diversity of talent and experience. ‘I have a very broad background,’ says Joram. ‘I studied both Accountancy and Fiscal Economics at university, but also did a post-master Management of Philanthropic (Equity) Funds and followed the professional education for tax advisors. I don't see myself as your average tax expert. I like to dive deep into the broader impact of fiscal changes to gain a thorough understanding of how everything fits together. Our projects are highly complex and demand great expertise as the client is undergoing a fundamental change in their business. What we do is extremely valuable. And, it's a new approach within the advisory market, as we work with a truly multidisciplinary team. This allows for many growth and development opportunities. We can pave out our own future.’

New challenges Arlette started her career with Deloitte as a working student. ‘After studying Tax Law followed by six months in Rome, I got back in touch with Deloitte again. I had already become enthused after an interview at an open day for companies at my student association. There was an opening for me at Indirect Tax and it soon turned out to be a perfect match. I have worked in several disciplines but kept returning to Indirect Tax. As my study focused primarily on direct taxes, I learnt everything on the job. Exactly how I like it. New challenges and learning new skills has always given me lots of energy, and I am not satisfied until I've found a solution. That's why the Transformations team suits me so well. The projects are usually quite sizeable and we work closely with the client and other disciplines. This allows me to continuously learn other things than “just” tax.'

From concept to implementation ‘An organisational change like an adjustment to the business model or the reduction of the number of legal entities has a huge ripple effect in the organisation explains Joram. ‘How does it impact the financial systems and IT, what are the consequences for financial reporting, how do you communicate internally and externally, how is HR affected, and so on. The change affects so many parts of an operation that the practical implementation can be extremely complex. That's why we have such diverse expertise in the Transformations team, from Tax & Legal to Consulting and Risk Advisory, and we augment our in-house knowledge with the specialist know-how and network of the client team. The nice thing about working in such a multidisciplinary team is that you learn to speak each other's language. We go from conceptual advice to practical implementation together, and that means adapting to changing circumstances, meeting operational challenges and thinking in terms of solutions and opportunities.’

Swift response ‘Nobody here works within their comfort zone,’ says Arlette with a smile. ‘Quite literally anything can come along and it's simply impossible to be prepared for everything. So we're all quite flexible and quick on our feet when it comes to a response. I learn new things every day and spend a lot of time working directly with our clients' senior management. At this moment, I'm working on an extensive project with an international Consumer Business client with a desire to optimize its business model and reduce the number of entities in order to simplify operations. It's a very time-consuming process with a significant impact on departments such as Legal, HR, Tax, Communications and Controlling – both on our side as well as the client’s side. The challenging task for the team is to streamline that process.’ ‘Our team basically has two types of people in it,’ Joram adds. ‘The experts with specialist knowledge and the generalists, or 'spiders in the web', who continuously keep all the stakeholders, disciplines and interdependencies connected so that projects are carried out as successfully as possible. Both profiles are more than welcome to join our team!’
