‘We work in a dynamic environment with a huge variety of engagements’

‘I’m interested in many topics in the field of Finance and Control’, Tamara (32) smiles. ‘But what I like best is the impact you can make within several organisations and with diverse teams. For me, Audit Advisory Public offers the perfect combo. Sometimes I’m fully focused on the planning & control cycle, within a local government department. And at other times I’m working on an engagement with colleagues from other Deloitte service lines, setting up processes for a crisis organisation. Our job involves so much more than just audit-related work. There’s plenty of variety and challenge.’

Switching between pillars Audit Advisory Public is built on four pillars: controlling, audit, subsidies, and IT. ‘They don’t function independently from each other – we combine them whenever we can’, Matthieu (28) explains. ‘If you want to, you can switch between pillars with every new assignment. But you can also specialise in one particular field. Personally, I prefer to have a look behind the scenes in various organisations. For instance, I did a number of IT-maturity assignments, and also provided advice to one of the Provinces in the Netherlands about the IT-aspects of the treasury process – the cash inflows and outflows. But I also performed a financial stress test for one of the Water Authorities to show different scenarios and their impact on the budget in terms of inflation and interest rate increase. At Deloitte, you can either work on large projects for a longer period of time, or briefly on several assignments. It all depends on what you want to do.’

Connecting with the team ‘Your career goals are directive’, Tamara agrees. ‘At Deloitte, people really take your personal preferences and goals into account, and they offer you all the help and the tools you need. If you want to keep on learning, this learning organization is where you belong. For me, that was the reason why I wanted to join a Big Four office again, one and a half years ago. Here, you’re surrounded by motivated, driven and ambitious people. That’s very contagious. After my graduation I worked for a secondment agency, but I missed the feeling of connecting with a team and an organisation. At Deloitte I can work in projects and still feel connected with my colleagues. We work across the country, but when we’re on the same project, we work together very closely. Not just within our own team, but also with other service lines. Every two weeks there’s a “collaboration day”’, every month there’s a “learn & share”, and we have dinners and trips on a regular basis. That team spirit is essential for me.’

Steep learning curve Matthieu also used to work for a secondment agency. ‘Last year, in April, I switched to Deloitte, because I missed the steep learning curve’, he says. ‘After I got my bachelor’s degree in 2018, I wanted to do a master’s for a long time. But I never did. At Deloitte it’s quite common to keep studying, so now I’m doing a master’s degree in controlling, just like Tamara.’ Tamara adds: ‘Whether it’s a post-master, a certificate, a course, or learning on the job, Deloitte offers you all kinds of continuous education. You can become an RA, RC of RE, or choose any other direction that matches the proposition that you’re part of.’ ‘It’s wonderful to get such an opportunity’, Matthieu continues. ‘Even though working and studying can be a tough combination from time to time. Fortunately, Deloitte offers plenty of support in terms of hours that you can use to study. Fridays are college days, and they are included in the project planning. Apart from that, so much attention is being paid to having a healthy work-life balance. No wonder our culture survey shows such high scores – the work culture is great.’

Making an impact Tamara and Matthieu also value the opportunity of making an impact – both in their jobs and beyond. ‘Our clients work in the fields of healthcare, education, central government, housing corporations, and local and regional government. So with our projects we make an important impact on our society’, Tamara explains. Matthieu continues: ‘But there’s also plenty of room to make an impact through the Deloitte Impact Foundation, which is a foundation that allows us to return something to society - pro bono.’ ‘Every aspect of Deloitte Audit Advisory Public shows a commitment to contribute to society, which is very inspiring’, Tamara concludes.
