What’s it like to be the boss?

Twelve-year-old Thijs van der Woude and eleven-year-old Nasha Lindeborg participated in ‘de Baas van Morgen’ and went on a trip with our CHRO Petra Tito on Thursday 10th June. In the Maastoren, they spoke about equal opportunities within the workplace.

As a project of the Deloitte Impact Foundation, Deloitte participated in the Boss of Tomorrow. This project is organized by JINC. JINC supports children that grow up in an environment with a socio-economic deprivation. These children have dreams and are talented, but need a little push. They lack a valuable network and places to train professional skills and knowledge that they need in the future. By participating in ‘de Baas van Morgen’ and other JINC projects, Deloitte tries to help these children. And this can be seen as an advantage, as Deloitte can learn from the ideas and opinions of the future generations. Petra Tito: ‘It was a relaxed and instructive day. Very inspiring to see the world through the eyes of the Bosses of Tomorrow.’’

Thijs and Nasha were given an important assignment: Petra, who has a very busy and important job, is in urgent need of advice on how to organize a post-COVID team event where everyone can enjoy and have a good time. Thijs and Nasha spent the day talking to several Deloitte colleagues to gain insight on how difficult it can be when you are dealing with different people. All of these people are unique and have different stories, needs and wishes. At the end of the day, Thijs and Nasha presented their advice to Petra. The team activity that they came up with, consisted of an interactive activity which would take place in a centrally located area served with delicious lunch where Thijs and Nasha have carefully considered all the interests of the various Deloitte colleagues.

‘What struck me the most is that children see the differences beyond the ‘appearance’ more easily and get to the core of someone's personality. It is encouraging to see that they have more of a natural acceptance of diversity and the equal opportunities that run parallel with it. I hope that they preserve this and make a difference in this area', says Petra. Deloitte has been participating in ‘de Baas van Morgen’ for the last couple of years. Petra: 'We believe that we can create a better policy and make better impact if we look at the challenges from different perspectives - diversity of thought. It is super instructive to explain the challenges in the language that the bosses can relate to and look at them from their perspectives. The outcome is refreshing and sometimes things are less complicated than they might seem.' This initiative is supported with hours from the Deloitte Impact Foundation.
