‘With data we enhance the audit quality and effectiveness’
Doing data analytics for the Deloitte Audit teams is fascinating, according to
Mitchell Burgersdijk, Junior Manager Audit Analytics at Deloitte. ‘Audit
Analytics combines two disciplines: finance and technology. And that offers
amazing challenges every day. Technology keeps developing rapidly and data
analytics will be even more vital in the future.’

After he finished his bachelor Cybersecurity & Data Analytics, Mitchell (26)
started his career at a smaller accountancy firm. ‘I really liked the job, but
after a while I needed more opportunities. I wanted to join a bigger firm, and
work with a bigger team and leading clients. That’s why I started working at
Deloitte. Why Deloitte? Some people are supporters of a football club for no
particular reason, and it’s a little like that for me with Deloitte. It just
felt right’, Mitchell smiles. ‘As it turned out, this is the place to work for
me.’

Working with data
Together with the Audit Analytics team, Mitchell does data analytics for his
colleagues at
Audit. ‘So we don’t do audits ourselves, but together with the Audit team we do
analytics
based on the data of our clients. That’s how we enhance the audit quality and
effectiveness,
from purchasing and sales analyses to timesheets analysis. Our team is able to
analyse any
process in systems such as Oracle, SAP, or Microsoft Navision. After the
analysis (in SQL), we
design visuals of the results, using tools such as Tableau. Presenting data in
an insightful
way is such an amazing challenge.
Next to that, we also get to have a look behind the scenes of all these
fascinating clients. While our accountants often work for three months at one
particular client, we serve up to five clients a week, in all parts of the
country, and in various industries, from health care, retail, and transportation
to education, real estate, and theme parks. The assignments are very diverse.’

Close and diverse team
His team is an example of diversity as well. ‘Some accountants have switched to
Audit
Analytics in order to enhance our data analytics capabilities with their audit
knowledge.
Other colleagues have a background in technology or mathematics. It’s a great
mix. 50 per
cent of the team are women, 50 per cent are men. And they come from all over the
world,
including India, China and the US. That accounts for great team dynamics.
Everyone has a
different angle, and because of the various fields of expertise we learn so much
from each
other’, Mitchell says passionately.
‘Also, since our team is not that big – 25 people – it feels like a close group.
We go on many trips together and know each other well. Our company culture is
open and transparent, and focused on innovation. We pay a lot of attention to
new tools or ideas.’

Personal development
For Mitchell - who is promoted to Manager soon - personal development is a vital
aspect of
his job. ‘I am focused on the future’, he says. ‘In October I will be starting
at manager level.
But I have other aspirations as well. I would like to work for Deloitte in New
York, next May.
Partly because I have wanted to work abroad ever since I was a kid, but also
because I’m a
huge fan of the TV-show ‘Suits’. I think I might experience a similar culture at
the Deloitte
New York office. Next, I would like to do an MBA in Management and Leadership,
because I
would like to grow to the director or partner level in the future. In short, I
like seizing
opportunities, and Deloitte offers lots of those.
There is always room for personal development, there’s counselling, and you get
to choose your own path. If you don’t have a background in technology, you’re
allowed to do two weeks of technology bootcamp, including
SQL, Tableau, PowerBI, Python
and other classes, next to the Audit onboarding programme. Also, there’s a buddy
for you during your first months, so there’s always a more experienced colleague
around to help you.’
